One of the most common questions we get from people booking their first class at KY Pilates is simple: what should I actually wear? The good news is Reformer Pilates doesn't need specialist kit, and we provide the one piece of equipment you might not already own.
Fitted, not loose
Loose clothing works against you on the Reformer. Baggy shorts or a wide t-shirt can catch on the carriage or springs, and it makes it harder for your instructor to see your alignment and correct your form – which matters more in your first few classes than at any other point. Fitted leggings or bike shorts, paired with a fitted top or sports bra, are the standard choice.
Grip socks – we've got you covered
Bare feet or regular socks aren't safe on the Reformer's foot bar and platform, so grip socks with rubber tread are required for every class. If you don't own a pair, don't worry: we sell grip socks in studio, so you can pick a pair up before your first class rather than needing to order some in advance. All Reformer equipment is provided as standard, and there's a water refill station in studio too.
Skip the jewellery and bulky watches
Long necklaces, dangling earrings and stacked bracelets can get in the way during exercises where you're gripping straps or lying back against the carriage. It's worth leaving statement jewellery at home or in one of our lockers.
Tie back long hair
Several exercises involve lying on your back or moving your head during transitions, so hair that's tied back or clipped up will save you mid-class adjustments.
What to bring
Just yourself, and anything you'd like to store in a locker while you train – we have lockers available, though showers aren't currently part of our Shoreditch studio, so plan accordingly if you're coming from work.
Booking is done online in advance through our class schedule, and classes fill quickly, so it's worth reserving your spot a few days ahead. Once you know what to wear, the only thing left to do is book your first class.
