Walking into a studio and looking at a Reformer for the first time is intimidating – the springs, straps and sliding carriage look built for advanced athletes, not first-timers. At KY Pilates, our women's-only studio in Shoreditch, most people on our Reformers started exactly where you are now: curious, a little nervous, and not sure what to expect. Here's why the Reformer is actually one of the friendlier ways to start a fitness practice, and what you'll notice in your first few sessions.
1. The machine adjusts to you, not the other way round
Every exercise on the Reformer is controlled by spring tension, so resistance can be increased or decreased instantly. A beginner and someone who's trained for years can do the same class, working the same movement at a level that's right for them. Our instructors set your springs and adjust them before every exercise, so you're never guessing.
2. Full-body work without the impact
Because you're moving against spring resistance rather than jumping, running or lifting free weights, Reformer Pilates is easy on the joints while still working legs, core, arms and back in one session. That's a big part of why it works for people managing old injuries, returning to exercise after time off, or just looking for something sustainable rather than punishing.
3. Core strength that carries into everyday life
Almost every exercise on the Reformer runs through the core, whether you notice it or not. Over a few weeks, clients typically notice better posture at their desks, less lower back tension, and more stability in whatever else they're active doing around Shoreditch and East London.
4. Small classes mean real instruction
A Reformer studio can only fit as many machines as it has, which naturally keeps classes small. Your instructor can actually see your form and correct it, rather than calling out cues to a packed room. For a beginner, that hands-on correction in the first few classes is what makes the movements click.
5. It's a workout, not a performance
Our studio is women's-only, deliberately so. For a lot of our members, that changes how comfortable they feel trying something new, wobbling through their first roll-up, or asking an instructor to repeat a cue. You're not expected to be flexible, strong or coordinated on day one – you're expected to show up.
What to expect from your first class
Arrive a few minutes early and wear fitted workout clothes and grip socks – if you don't already own a pair, they're available to purchase with us, and all Reformer equipment is provided in every class. Booking is online and in advance, since our Shoreditch classes fill up quickly. See our schedule for class times, or head to pricing to see how to get started.
