Pregnancy and the months after birth are two of the most common reasons clients tell us they're changing how they train, rather than stopping altogether. At KY Pilates, we don't run a separate "pregnancy class" – every class is our standard small-group Reformer format – but the workout adapts a great deal based on what you tell your instructor before class starts.
Tell your instructor first, every time
This is the one non-negotiable part: any pregnancy, injury or medical condition needs to be disclosed to your instructor before class, every time you book, not just once. It's how they know which modifications to offer that session – and it's a requirement written into our studio waiver, not just a suggestion.
Pilates during pregnancy: what generally changes
If you were already training before pregnancy, most instructors will have you continue with modifications rather than stopping outright – always with medical clearance from your own doctor or midwife first, and always instructor-informed. As pregnancy progresses, the usual changes are avoiding lying flat on your back for extended periods (the Reformer's box and props make this easy to work around), and shifting the focus toward maintaining mobility and pelvic floor awareness rather than pushing for new personal bests.
This is general guidance, not medical advice specific to you – every pregnancy is different, and your GP, midwife or obstetrician is the right person to confirm what's appropriate at each stage.
Returning to Reformer after birth
Most guidance suggests waiting for medical clearance before returning to exercise – commonly around 6–8 weeks after a vaginal birth or 10–12 weeks after a caesarean, though this varies and should come from whoever provided your postnatal care, not a fitness studio. Once you're cleared, easing back in with instructor-led modifications – rebuilding core and pelvic floor strength before returning to full-intensity sessions – is the standard, sensible approach.
What doesn't change
Whatever stage you're at, the practical basics stay the same: classes are capped at a small group size so instructors can actually see and adjust your form, equipment is provided (grip socks are available to purchase in studio if you need them), and booking is online in advance. If you're not sure whether a particular week is the right time to come back, get in touch before booking and we're happy to talk it through.
